The why, what, and how of masonry structures
Chimney rebuilds
A chimney roofline rebuild is a vital undertaking that greatly bolsters the structural integrity of both the chimney and the house. This procedure entails dismantling and reconstructing the entire stack from the roofline upwards. It becomes necessary when there is substantial deterioration, vertical cracking, spalling bricks, or damaged mortar joints. The rebuild includes a new crown and cap, which play a pivotal role in preventing water entry into the roof. This is of utmost importance as water seepage can lead to further damage to the bricks and the roof. By ensuring a proper rebuild, homeowners can avert potential water damage to their homes, thereby preserving the structural soundness of the entire building. This process usually takes 1-3 days depedning on the size of the chimney and roof access.
Brick tuckpointing
Tuckpointing plays a crucial role in maintaining the structural integrity of brick structures. It involves the careful removal of deteriorated mortar from the joints, which are then filled with new mortar. More than just an aesthetic enhancement, tuckpointing is a preventative maintenance procedure that helps to halt the progression of water ingress and further environmental damage. This process is particularly beneficial for historical brick homes. This process usually takes 1-5 days depedning on the size of the area being tuckpointed
Basement tuckpointing
Stone basement tuckpointing is an essential procedure that significantly strengthens the structural integrity of the basement and is instrumental in keeping water, rodents, and insects at bay. This process involves the meticulous removal of deteriorated mortar and any loose stones. A fresh mortar mix is then prepared and applied to the cleared areas. The stones are firmly pressed back into this new mortar, ensuring a secure and stable fit. This not only restores the original appearance of the stone basement but also reinforces the structure against future wear and tear, thereby enhancing its durability and lifespan. Furthermore, tuckpointing maintains the stability of the stone wall, prevents groundwater from seeping in from the exterior, helps keep critters out, contributes to a cleaner basement, and aids in identifying any future shifts in a stone foundation wall. This process usually takes 2-3 days depending on the size and condition of the basement.
Stone resetting
Resetting stone steps or walkways with new mortar is a meticulous process that significantly enhances the structural integrity of the structure. Initially, the old, deteriorated mortar and any loose stones are carefully removed. Then, a new mortar mix is prepared and applied to the cleared areas. The stones are then firmly pressed back into this fresh mortar, ensuring a secure and stable fit. This process not only revives the original appearance of the stone steps or walkway but also strengthens the structure against future wear and tear, thereby enhancing its durability and lifespan. This process usually takes 1-2 days depedning on the size of the structure and condition of the base.
Stone veneer
The application of stone veneer is a detailed process that significantly boosts the aesthetic appeal of a home and provides enduring effects. The process commences with the installation of one or two layers of building paper, followed by the proper installation of dimpled and galvanized wire lath. A layer of Type S mortar is then applied over the lath and “scratched” while it’s still wet to enhance the adhesion of the stone. The stone veneer is then applied using mortar. The final outcome is a home exterior that not only appears more appealing but also withstands the test of time, owing to the durability and longevity of stone.
